Join-As-You-Go With Single Crochet

Join-as-you-go technique is commonly used for connecting individually made motifs while working the last round of each motif. This technique varies from pattern to pattern, depending on the design and it’s relatively easy to do once you understand the concept. In one of our previous articles you can find a video tutorial for –> Picot Joining associated with our Elephant Blanket Pattern.

Single Crochet Joining is another great method to join crochet motifs as you go! Insert the hook into the indicated stitch (or space) of the current motif; yarn over & pull up a loop (sc remains unfinished with 2 loops on the hook); insert the hook into the corresponding st of the previously made motif; yarn over & pull through all loops on the hook (sc-join made).

Begin joining with 2 loops of the unfinished sc on the hook –> Insert the hook in the corner st of the corresponding motif; yarn over & pull through all loops on on the hook (first sc-join made). Work sc-join towards the next corner.

When working sc-join in the corner between the 2 already joined motifs, insert the hook into the same corner st as the previous sc-join & skip the overlapping sc-join. TIP: You may find it helpful to place a marker in the corner stitch that will be joined. Continue working in the same manner around the remaining edges of the motif.

If join-as-you-go technique is not your cup of tea, you can simply sew motifs together! Finish all required motifs without joining and place them right up against each other as indicated in the pattern. Thread a tapestry needle with a single strand of yarn (using the same color as for the last round of the motif) & whipstitch all the adjoining edges.
