I was asked by a fellow crocheter to design a colorful hummingbird rug pattern as her best friend has been battling cancer and she wants to make her something special for Christmas this year. While I normally do not design patterns by request, her story really touched my heart. If you do not know yet, we recently moved again…after being in our dream home in BC for only a year. As much as we do not like moving, we chose to be closer to my father-in-law in Alberta and support him in his difficult journey fighting cancer. The past couple of months have been a roller coaster of emotions for our family, but working on this colorful project helped me to find some comfort and joy. I hope you will enjoy making it as well.

Hummingbirds have so many colors, and the best part of this design is that you can simply pick any 4 of your favorite colors to make your own unique hummingbird. The pattern includes written instructions for left and right-handed crochet, as well as images and diagrams. To make this rug, I worked with 3 strands of Bernat Premium yarn held together using the Navajo Plying Technique (Long Chain Method).

If you wish, you can convert this pattern into a wall hanging or an applique for a blanket by using a single strand of the same yarn and a smaller size hook. This wall hanging turned out 27″ X 22″ and I attached it to the wall temporally with a Scotch Rough Surface Painter’s Tape (affiliate link), using small rolls made of tape across the back side of hummingbird. If you want to attach it permanently, you can use a Double Sided 3M Heavy Duty Mounting Tape (affiliate link). You can also make a blanket using any basic stitch patterns (I just modified slightly my Retro Owl Blanket) and backstitch around your applique onto the blanket using corresponding color of yarn. To secure a large applique, you might want to backstitched around the middle row of the head and the body as well. I left the tail, shells, and spirals unstiched for 3D effect.
